Matthew is a writer, filmmaker and lawyer. His journalism has appeared or is forthcoming in Mother Jones, Slate, and The New Republic, and his creative work in The Rumpus, Pinch Journal, and The Deadlands, among other places. The Hollywood Reporter called him “a talent to watch” for his debut feature film as writer/director, The Skin of the Teeth, and he was a finalist for the Iowa Short Fiction Award and a semifinalist for the University New Orleans Publishing Lab Prize. He is a graduate of the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop and the Tin House Speculative Fiction Workshop. He was previously a litigator at WilmerHale focusing on antidiscrimination issues, including fighting for the right to abortion in Ohio and challenging Virginia’s felon disenfranchisement scheme. He is currently working on a book about the legal industry.
